Heading home

Today is our last day in our little rustic cabin on the west coast. Tomorrow we head home, back to the realities of work and daily life. That means I’ll have even less time to write. I’ll just have to try to rigidly structure my day to include an hour of two of writing. I’d like to do more, but even when I can, four hours is my limit before my brain needs a recharge.

I awoke to fog, and after breakfast we headed out to hike some of the local trails. The tide was coming in, so the sound of the pounding surf as we walked the seaside trail was almost deafening. I could sit and watch waves like that all day. Lucky we didn’t, or we would have missed seeing the black bear on the beach, foraging for food. We kept our distance, and the bear kept to himself. It was the first time I had ever seen a black bear in the wild.

I have not begun fleshing out my notes yet. I prefer to let them percolate in my head until they’re ready to spill out. Plus I take that time to work out logistical problems with the story. I just replaying a scene in my head in various ways until a version plays out that makes sense. then when I do sit down to write, everything flows out as fast as I can type it. That’s just the way I work.

I need to get some sleep. We have a long drive ahead of us tomorrow.
