Buried (the script)

Ok, I starting reading this script last night and I have to admit, it is a page turner. I had to finish it before going to bed. If the script is an accurate depiction of the film now premiering at Sundance, then the hype is well deserved.

There are some flaws. the writer, Chris Sparling, skates on the edge of the “show, don’t tell” concept. There are parts of the script that would be hard to shoot, since they deal with thoughts. These parts are there for a better reading experience. Most of what happens in the script is expository, and the nature of the story demands it. However, it can get a little tired. Luckily the script is short and the dialogue crackles, so likely (hopefully) the audience won’t be bored.

Not to provide spoilers, some parts of the script I’m sure have been added to provide some kind of justification for the ending. Frankly, I didn’t think they were needed, because these kinds of horrific events do happen to regular people who have done nothing wrong. It’s sad reality, but true.

After reading this, I am doubly stoked to see the final film.
