Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

This film is an interesting take on slasher films. It builds the story by showing how one man becomes a serial killer. It’s low budget, but the visual quality and performances elevate it to a higher level. There’s lots of nods to past slasher films and it’s fun to try and find them all. Of course, as with all slasher films, the slashing must begin eventually and that’s where the film stumbles. It does not offer anything new in that realm. It certainly didn’t reinvent the slasher/horror genre as “Scream” did in 1996, but it certainly offers a fresh twist.
