Killers
This is another example of a film with very real violence trying to be funny. It’s an incredibly hard balance to achieve. But that’s the least of this film’s problems. First, it takes too long to set up. What was done in 40 minutes could have been done in 10. Heigl and Kutcher do have some chemistry, some, but the laughs fall flat. In fact there’s little to no laughs at all. Selleck and O’Hara are just filler, a means to an end so the end can have a twist. Robert Deniro’s character in Meet the Parents is a better example of a father-in-law with a secret past. Much funnier too. While I watched this film, I spent a lot of time thinking of other films that achieved the comedy/violence balance well, instead of really being engaged with the story. One particularly good example of a great balance between comedy and violence is The Pink Panther Strikes Again. And for a much better version of the wife-turned-assassin idea, you can’t go wrong with True Lies. Seek them out and skip this.
