The Adjustment Bureau
I’m sure everyone has had a moment where they have an immediate connection with someone, one so powerful it lingers in their memory for the rest of their days. I have. I’ve often wondered what would have happened to my life if I had pursued other people. To watch someone else act on that is compelling, and the idea that there are individuals that maintain our fated paths is equally interesting. But in this world, breaking free of that path, using free will, is perilous and could get your memory erased. Using doors as spacial portals is an idea that I love. The only problem I had with this film was the end. The conflict that propelled this intriguing story is arbitrarily snuffed out, wiped clean, making what came before seem unnecessary. Why? So we could have a happy ending? Construct the rules of the story’s world and adhere to them. Don’t worry about the audience. We can take it.
